The previous Non-Habitual Tax Resident (NHR) regime has been discontinued. However, a new Transitional Regime has been introduced for individuals who establish tax residence in Portugal in 2024 and meet specific requirements. These include taking certain steps to establish their residence in Portugal until the end of 2023.
Under this regime, taxpayers can benefit from potential exemptions on most foreign income and a 10% tax rate on pensions.
The "Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation", also known as NHR 2.0, remains an attractive option for individuals who have not been tax residents in Portugal in the last 5 years. This regime offers access to tax benefits for a period of 10 years.
With NHR 2.0, you can benefit from tax exemptions on passive income from foreign sources, such as dividends, capital gains (a significant update), interest, and rental income.
